Food Pantry

Frances Byrd Horn of Plenty Food Pantry

Mount Olive Lutheran Church’s call to serve the hungry is rooted in Christ’s teaching in Matthew 25:35–36 and has shaped the life of the congregation for decades. In 1967, in response to visible hunger across Dallas, Mount Olive founded what is recognized as the city’s first hunger pantry. Operated by church members, this early ministry provided grocery bags to individuals and families in need throughout the metroplex, establishing a foundation of faith-driven service that continues today.

As community needs evolved, so did the pantry. In October 1999, under the leadership of Pastor Ralph Gipson, the ministry was formally renamed the Frances Byrd Horn of Plenty Food Pantry in honor of Ms. Frances Byrd, who faithfully led the original 1967 pantry. This moment marked both a tribute to her legacy and a renewed commitment to addressing hunger with consistency and care.

Over time, the pantry’s focus became more localized as poverty and food insecurity intensified in Southern Dallas. Serving neighborhoods primarily within ZIP codes 75210 and 75215, the pantry adapted to rising unemployment, housing instability, and a growing homeless population. What began as basic grocery assistance expanded into a structured, year-round hunger ministry that provides weekly groceries for families and snack packs and meals for neighbors experiencing homelessness.

The pantry also grew into a trusted anchor within the community—known not only for food distribution, but as a place where neighbors could reliably turn during difficult seasons. Over the years, Mount Olive strengthened relationships with nearby congregations, community organizations, and service partners, creating a network of shared responsibility for addressing hunger and related challenges.

Today, the Frances Byrd Horn of Plenty Food Pantry serves hundreds of neighbors each week and remains one of the longest-running hunger ministries in Dallas. Its history reflects steady growth, adaptability, and an enduring commitment to serve faithfully as community needs change. Guided by its original call and sustained by strong relationships, the pantry continues to live out its mission—responding to hunger with compassion, consistency, and hope—while remaining deeply rooted in the life of Southern Dallas.

 Our Volunteers & Partners

We recently hosted our annual Volunteer and Partner Luncheon, a cherished tradition where we recognize and celebrate the incredible individuals and organizations who make our mission possible. Guests enjoyed a delicious barbecue lunch and peach cobbler.

During the event, we asked attendees to share how they’ve been involved with the food pantry and the impact it has had on their lives and the lives of those they serve.

Thank You for Those Who Help Us Serve!

A very special thank you to our partners and sponsors. We value your commitment to help us serve the community.
